Fifteen Candles

MiniMannerz has a birthday this weekend. The eight pound, twelve ounce baby I first met is now a 175 pound, six foot two guy (I, however, still look like a dewey faced adolescent and defy anyone to deny me my illusions).

So here is a list of the advice I have for him:

1. If someone tells you they love you before they have gotten to know you, be wary.

2. Always put on your own proverbial mask first. But don't dawdle with the task, so you can be there for the people you love.

3. Never underestimate the power of prayer....

4. ....*after* you've done what you're supposed to do.

5. Always live life so that you can face yourself in the mirror (and strive to have that mirror be in your very own house). :)

Mother To Son
A Poem by Langston Hughes

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now—
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

No way you're the mother of a 15-year-old! You don't look a day over 15 yourself.

Happy birthday to the not-so-little man!
