Tuesday Morning

My mom introduced me to the art of the treasure hunt, and with that came trips to Tuesday Morning. In the eighties, Tuesday Morning was her go to place for wedding gifts. This was before wedding registries were as commonly used as they are now and guests picked out gifts themselves.

My mother figured most couples would get their fill of toasters. She usually found very nice crystal (Waterford, Lenox, et al) and gifted that.

Up until a year ago, I popped into Tuesday morning almost weekly. Their old logo was a familiar standby.

And then something changed. The Annapolis store moved from one location to the one next door, and with the move came what seemed like a complete change in direction. It's hard to explain what the difference is but easy to sum it up: not good.

The old store was a jumble of mid to high end finds. Yes, you had to hunt, but oh, the treasure when you did! You could run into Tuesday Morning to grab a $3 scented candle or a $4 children's book, but you could also find high end merchandise in cookware, bedding, home decor and more.

A Dollar General moved into Tuesday Morning's old space, and it was becoming harder and harder to tell the difference between the two. When I drove up earlier this week to be greeted by a rack of cheap and not cutely cheap pajamas outside the store, I decided to write and ask what was happening.

Here's their response:

Thank you for contacting us.  Tuesday Morning always appreciates the feedback of our customers.

Tuesday Morning  is in the middle of a turnaround.  We believe strongly in taking care of our store customers and wish to devote our full time attention to ensuring we have the most up-to-date, exciting, and value priced merchandise at all times.  We are returning to our roots to enhance the Treasure Hunt of our in-store shopping experience for you, our customer.  I believe that you will begin to see a difference in the product in our stores in late Summer and early Fall and hope that you will stop in to see us again.

My translation? Not many other people liked the changes either. It's always nice to know that it's not just me. :)

A quick trip to their website revealed a new logo, too. I don't know if this is the logo that accompanied the bad changes, or if it's being rolled out for the new. Either way, it seemed a good sign that change is in the air again for Tuesday Morning.

I really appreciated their quick and on subject response (so many form responses don't address the exact issue). I'm looking forward to going back in time to Tuesday Morning!
